The Cleveland Sport Car Club is a group of automotive enthusiasts
who like to eat or, alternatively, a group of eating enthusiasts
who have an affinity for fun cars. The roots of the club date back
to the early fifties when seven young men who shared an interest in
driving strange little European two seater roadsters began to
gather on a regular basis. Later in the fifties, the club staged
"round the houses"
road races at Put-in-Bay. These races may have
been the last "true" road races, i.e., races held on roads normally
accessible to the public. Insurance/liability concerns put an end
to the Put-in-Bay event but the enthusiasm continued. Throughout
the ensuing five decades (and counting), the club has provided
members with various opportunities to use and enjoy their sports
cars via rallies, tours, gymkhanas and shows. As the club has aged,
so has the average age of the membership. We are no longer a band
of rebellious young Turks zooming around the countryside terrifying
the livestock and gentry. We have become a relatively sedate crowd
of what might pass for mature people were it not for our continuing
interest in strange vehicles.
For more than forty years the club staged at least one major event each year. The Alley Ralley originated by the Cleveland Sport Car Club has to be a serious contender for the longest running automotive event in the northeast Ohio area. It is one of relatively few urban rallies, most such events being held out in the countryside specifically to avoid the sort of challenges (chuck holes, one-way streets, unexpected traffic jams, etc.) which characterize the Alley Ralley. Eventually increasing age and diminishing manpower threatened to put an end to the annual spring madness that is the Alley Ralley but fortunately the northeast region of the SCCA has seen fit to pick up this event and carry on the tradition. Our current events tend toward pleasant social outings which seem to usually include an opportunity to eat. News about upcoming events can be found in our monthly newsletter, The CHECKPOINT. We also try and maintain a calendar of club events online. In addition to the basic What, When and Where information, the calendar may include links to additional information such as maps showing the location of coming events or reports on events past. We hope this site provides useful information for current members and hopefully may encourage prospective members to get in touch with us and join the fun. Check out some photos from our past events and then, if you're interested, send us an email at postmaster@keithsykora.org. |
